No Google Services on Huawei devices

New solution for our Android apps

Since last year, Google has been prohibited by the US Government from working with Huawei on new device models available after 16 May 2019. Google’s apps and services are not available for preload or sideload on these Huawei devices. Netcetera has developed Android apps that rely on some of the Google Services (e.g. notification and security) and are therefore affected by the Huawei ban on new devices. Affected are our ToPay Mobile Wallet und ToPay Cloud Payment (Android SDK).

Our development teams evaluated the possibilities to substitute the used Google Services with services from Huawei and/or different providers that are not affected by the ban. As a first solution we are currently implementing an abstraction layer in order to be independent of Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging. With this solution in place, our ToPay Mobile Wallet and ToPay Cloud Payment apps will work seamlessly on Android devices with and without Google Services. The release of this functionality can be expected by mid-January 2021.

We have already planned further developments around this topic, e.g. integrating the specific security features provided by Huawei. Stay tuned for more information at a later date.

Another implication that we would like to point out: GooglePay does not work on the affected Huawei devices as long as this ban of the US government is in place. With our ToPay Cloud Payment SDK we are offering a solution that works regardless of Google Services.
